Use of Yoga and Mindfulness Meditation to Complement Occupational Therapy Interventions for Individuals Throughout the Lifespan

Participants should wear comfortable clothing that allows them to move freely. Please bring a yoga or exercise mat with you. Chairs will be available for all participants; all body types and abilities are welcome!

 Objectives:

Participants will be able to describe yoga and mindfulness meditation philosophies in relation to the occupational therapy theory and process as defined by the Occupational Therapy Practice Framework (AOTA, 2014).

Participants will be able to interpret current evidence-based findings on yoga and mindfulness meditation to support occupational therapy interventions in the clinic.

Participants will be able to identify 2 to 3 yoga techniques that can be integrated into current treatment processes with their identified populations.

Biography:

Kim Mollo, OTD, OTR/L is a registered and licensed occupational therapist (PA, NJ, and DE) and a certified yoga instructor (Kripalu and Pranakriya styles).

Kim obtained her master's degree in occupational therapy (OT) from Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia in 2006 and her doctorate in OT from Chatham University in Pittsburgh in 2015. She is a full-time Assistant Professor at Jefferson in the Occupational Therapy Department.

Kim is trained in the Kripalu Yoga (200-hour certified) and Pranakriya Yoga (500-hour certified) traditions, both of which have a much lesser emphasis on the various flow vinyasa practices currently popular in the United States.

Kim combines her extensive background in eastern yoga traditions and philosophy with her occupational therapy training rooted in a more holistic western healthcare model in private practice. She specializes in the treatment of executive functioning deficits, motor planning disorders, visual perceptual disorders, non-verbal learning disorders, ADHD, anxiety, and mood disorders.
