Occupational Therapy Licensure in Pennsylvania
Who needs a license in Pennsylvania?
Only individuals who are Occupational Therapists and Occupational Therapy Assistants licensed by the Pennsylvania State Licensure Board may practice, or represent themselves as able to practice, Occupational Therapy in the Commonwealth. State Licensure Guidelines include the following:
Senate Bill 1528 went into effect on September 5, 2012. OTs can now accept referrals from Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants, MDs, Podiatrists and Optometrists. This legislation updated some language regarding the use of "splints" to "orthotic devices" for reimbursement purposes, mandates liability coverage for practitioners, and provides a plan for impaired professionals.

Visit the State Board for Occupational Therapy Education and Licensure webpage and click on Announcements for more information about the professional liability insurance requirement for occupational therapists that went into effect July 1, 2013. Information about continuing competency requirements effective as of June 22, 2013 is also available from the State Board's webpage. Questions about this renewal need to be directed to the State Board for Licensure.

Apply for, or renew an occupational therapy license
POTA does not handle occupational therapy licensure. This is handled by a separate organization that is part of Pennsylvania's Department of State. A copy of the Occupational Therapy Practice Act, license application procedures, license renewal forms and other information are available from the Pennsylvania State Board of Occupational Therapy Education and Licensure.
Questions about licensure
The Pennsylvania Occupational Therapy Association (POTA) has no jurisdiction over occupational therapy licensure in the Commonwealth. All questions about licensure should be directed to the State Board.
